Flashback Friday to an Awesome Amika Duo

by wildnorthernbeauty

I stumbled across two gems that were hibernating under my sink, hidden by texturizing sprays, shampoo bottles, and hot tools. I could pinch myself for losing track of these guys! It was perfect timing for finding this nourishing, conditioning duo as it is a frigid seventeen degrees here in Pittsburgh. I am excited to share with you two (nearly) empty sprays that have served me well.

I’m talking about the Amika Touchable Hairspray and the Amika Silken Up Dry Conditioner.

Note: There have been updates on these products. The Touchable Hairspray has been discontinued; Amika’s Fluxus Touchable Hairspray is the replacement.

Fun, Funky, Fresh.

Amika is a high-energy brand with packaging that reflects their upbeat, vibrant Brooklyn roots. With a code of beliefs focusing on inclusivity, it is hard not to fall in love with the varying patterns, textures, and swirls of bright colors found on all of their products. They are vegetarian (with some vegan options), cruelty-free (they do not test on animals), and “free from sulfates, MIT, MCI, phthalates, and artificial colors.” (As told here.) Additionally, they are color-safe.  Furthermore, they cast a big net on price point with products falling anywhere from $10 to $100, excluding their line of hot tools.

Fun Fact.

Amika is partnered with HairToStay. HairToStay is a non-profit dedicated to helping cancer patients afford scalp-cooling treatments designed to reduce hair loss during chemotherapy (an FDA-cleared device).

Amika Fluxus Touchable Hairspray: $25.00
Amika Silken Up Dry Conditioner: $25.00

Amika Touchable Hairspray: Is it soft and workable? Yes. It doesn’t crunch or bunch. Nor has it left my scalp feeling greasy. It is easily buildable, smells lovely, and similar in feel to Aveda’s Air Control. In conclusion, I don’t have a bad thing to say about this hairspray! However, this product was discontinued and replaced with the Fluxus Touchable Hairspray. I am unsure of the product differences, but I would certainly like to try the Fluxus Touchable Hairspray to compare formulations.

Amika Silken Up Dry Conditioner: My thought process in purchasing this item was, “Fingers crossed it stays in my hair and doesn’t wind up on my face.” I was hopeful that this wasn’t going to be another product that would work its way up my pillow and onto my face in my sleep. Nope! The consistency is super lightweight. I haven’t had any issues with an oily scalp using this – even prior to Accutane. The finish is beautiful in addition to fighting winter static / those pesky flyaways. Highly recommend!

Amika's Secret Ingredient

The secret ingredient in all Amika products is sea buckthorn berry. I had never heard of this fruit before! Sea buckthorn is a shrub with tiny berries that grows in sub-alpine conditions.  It is rich in fatty acids and can be used to “prevent infections, improve sight, and slow the aging process.” (Source) Sea buckthorn has many unique health benefits and uses. (See herehere, and here.)

Final Thoughts

I love stumbling across fascinating information and remarkable stories regarding brands in my research. The fun-fact section is here to stay! I look forward to purchasing more Amika products to try in the future.

Hope you all have a lovely weekend!
